The last half dollar series to be completely struck in highly pure 90% fine silver, the Franklin Half Dollar features one of America’s greatest patriots and the only non-president to be featured on a United States circulating coin—Ben Franklin. It replaced the Walking Liberty Half Dollar series which ended in 1947 and was struck until being unexpectedly ended in 1963 after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy when the U.S. Mint decided to pay tribute to JFK following his assassination.

Here you can secure one of those impressive coins struck in 1951 at the San Francisco Mint, which struck the coin for only five years from 1950 to 1954. The portrait of Ben Franklin design was designed by designed by John R. Sinnock, the U.S. Mint’s 8th Chief Engraver, and represents the first time someone other than a former President adorned the obverse of a U.S. coin in the 20th century. The reverse, designed by Gilroy Roberts, the U.S. Mint’s 9th Chief Engraver, features the Liberty Bell along with a small eagle.
